    Another season comes to end

It's been a long, interesting seaon following the Boston Red Sox this year.  What looked so promising in early July faded away.  It reminds me of my youth and the first Boston Massacre in 1978, but it also feels different.  I can't remember watching a sports team get hammered by injuries so mercilessly.   And cancer?  Wow.

It's weird.  I am not sure which player was my favorite.  Kind of childish thing to do, but I like to have one.  I am kind of leaning towards Youklis.  He just goes out and plays hard.  What else do you want when you yourself are just a duffer?

I am not that broken up about the possibility of Trot Nixon leaving.  I haven't been that close to the Sox to feel the tug of emotion for the things he has done over the years.   Manny thing is weird.  He can be brilliant, but his outfield play (as I witnessed in Seattle can be horrible).  I kind of want Lowell and Loretta and Gonzalex to return, but not sure if they will.

I am also not too excited by the MLB playoffs.  I am rooting for the Padres as the only team not to win a World Series.  Not looking so good so far.

Game One Hundred and Sixty-Two - And that's all folks

A win.  Go way to end the season.

Final Score:  Orioles 0, Red Sox 9

Current Record:  86 wins, 76 losses

Game One Hundred and Sixty-One - Timlin Can't Save It In the Ninth

Timlin falters again.  he has almost as many blown saves as saves.

Final Score:  Orioles 5, Red Sox 4

Current Record:  85 wins, 76 losses

Game One Hundred and Sixty - Taverez Wins Another One

Tavarez trying to run out and tag the runner out at second was hilarious.  It would have been better if he had gotten him out.

Final Score:  Orioles 3, Red Sox 4

Current Record:  85 wins, 75 losses

Game One Hundred and Fifty-Nine - Rays Hammer Beckett, Sox

Beckett just fell apart in the Seventh.  9 runs.  Uggh.

Final Score:  Rays 11, Red Sox 0

Current Record:  84 wins, 75 losses

Game One Hundred and Fifty-Eight - Schilling Exits 2006 Season with a Win

It's always nice to get a win.

Final Score:  Rays 1, Red Sox 5

Current Record:  84 wins, 74 losses

Game One Hundred and Fifty-Seven - Red Sox Only Manage 2 Hits in Loss

    Ugly.

Final Score:  Red Sox 0, Blue Jays 5

Current Record:  83 wins, 74 losses

Game One Hundred and Fifty-Six - Sox Get Thumped

    A game to forget.

Final Score:  Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 13

Current Record:  83 wins, 73 losses

Game One Hundred and Fifty-Five - Burns Loses It Late for the Bosox

    A loss.

Final Score:  Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 5

Current Record:  83 wins, 72 losses

Game One Hundred and Fifty-Four - Tavarez Pitches Complete Game Gem

Wow.  What a difference as a starter.  Given Clement's situation, Tavarez looks like he can be a solid 5th starter in the rotation or at least a floater between the bullpen and the starting rotation. He has only given up 1 home run as a starter.  He also did in 99 pitches.
Bottom of the order hit well, with both Kapler and Gonzo going 2 for 4.

Final Score:  Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 1

Current Record:  83 wins, 71 losses

Game One Hundred and Fifty-Three - Papi Sets Home Run Record as Red Sox Thrash Santana

    A win.  A good win.
Papi hits two home runs.  Beckett goes 8 innings and wins a pitching duel.

Final Score:  Twins 0, Red Sox 6

Current Record:  82 wins, 71 losses

Game One Hundred and Fifty-Two - Papi Hits Number 50 in Loss

    A loss.

Final Score:  Twins 8, Red Sox 2

Current Record:  81 wins, 71 losses

Game One Hundred and Fifty-One - Wakefield Struggles in Loss

    A loss.

Final Score:  Twins 7, Red Sox 3

Current Record:  81 wins, 70 losses

Game One Hundred and Fifty - Sox Sweep the Double-Header

Crisp made another great play in center, robbing Posada of a home run.  Trot Nixon hit a home run.   Loretta sac flies the winning run in the top of the ninth.  The Red Sox get the win.  Oh to get a win against the Yankees in August instead of September.

Final Score:  Red Sox 5, Yankees 4

Current Record:  81 wins, 69 losses

Game One Hundred and Forty-Nine - Sox Win Opener

Papi hit his 49th homer and the bats came alive for 4 runs in the 7th to win this game.   Too bad Snyder didn't get the win.

Final Score:  Red Sox 6, Yankees 3

Current Record:  80 wins, 69 losses

Game One Hundred and Forty-Eight - Sox Can't Sweep the Double-Header from the Yanks

Tavarez pitched well enough to get the win, but the bullpen and Wily Mo struggled in the late innings which saw the Yankees reclaim the lead and the game.

Final Score:  Red Sox 5, Yankees 7

Current Record:  79 wins, 69 losses

Game One Hundred and Forty-Seven - Beckett Gets 15th Win

After rain created the need for back to back double-headers, the Red Sox came out behind Beckett and got a win.
I watched the rather uneventful first inning where we saw Papi blast a double to quiet the boos and then saw that Wily Mo is not Manny as he struck out with men at second and third.

I missed Beckett giving up the home run, but hey he has been better about the long ball lately.  He did give up 5 walks.

Good to get a win and Timlin saved it in the 9th.  Woohoo.  We beat the Yankees.  Too bad it is a rather meaningless game in the grand scheme of things.

Final Score:  Red Sox 5, Yankees 2

Current Record:  79 wins, 68 losses

    September 15

Game One Hundred and Forty-Six - Loretta Singles In the Victory

The bullpen, much aligned by me of late, actually held it together for 5 innings of shutout baseball that coincided with a brief siting of the vaunted, but rarely seen this season Red Sox offense that plated 6 runs in total, including one in each of the final three innings.  Papi got walked 4 times, but Varitek had an awesome game going 3 for 4.  There were a lot of men left on base.  Oh well, a win is a win. Good to get one even if just part of playing out the string of games.

Now time for Yankees-Red Sox fun and exciting.  I just hope Beckett can walk a few less hitters this time.

Final Score:  Red Sox 6, Orioles 5

Current Record:  78 wins, 68 losses

Game One Hundred and Forty-Five - Wakefield Gets No Support in Return

    A loss.

Final Score:  Red Sox 0, Orioles 4

Current Record:  77 wins, 68 losses

    September 13

Game One Hundred and Forty-Four - Timlin Almost Loses It in the 9th

Timlin gave up 4 runs in the 9th to make things interesting.   Sigh.

Final Score:  Red Sox 6, Orioles 5

Current Record:  77 wins, 67 losses
